SUMMARY:World Sand Dune Day
DESCRIPTION:The preservation and strengthening of natural coastal defences\, such as sand dune systems\, plays an important role in increasing our coastal resilience to the impacts of climate change. Other countries\, such as the Netherlands\, are protecting and restoring their sand dune systems as a cheaper and better method – in some cases – than hard coastal protection works. \n#ProtectOurDunes initiative is asking the public to help protect the dunes by enjoying the beach responsibly and will include awareness raising measures on social media to convey the importance of our sand dunes to coastal resilience and biodiversity\, how they can be easily damaged from recreational activities\, along with simple measures to preserve them. \nhttps://www.caro.ie/projects-research/campaigns/sand-dune

SUMMARY:International Vulture Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:The first Saturday in September each year is International Vulture Awareness Day. \nVultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in many areas that they occur. Populations of many species are under pressure and some species are facing extinction. \nThe International Vulture Awareness Day has grown from Vulture Awareness Days run by the Birds of Prey Programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England\, who decided to work together and expand the initiative into an international event. \nIt is now recognised that a co-ordinated international day will publicise the conservation of vultures to a wider audience and highlight the important work being carried out by the world’s vulture conservationists. \nOn the first Saturday in September\, the aim is for each participating organisation to carry out their own activities that highlight vulture conservation and awareness. This website provides a central place for all participants to outline these activities and see the extent of vulture conservation across the world. Additionally\, it is a valuable resource for vulture workers to learn about the activities of their colleagues and to perhaps develop new collaborations or exchange information. \nhttps://www.vultureday.org/

SUMMARY:International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
DESCRIPTION:September 16th marks International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Although there would be no life without sunlight\, the energy emanating from the sun would be too much for life on Earth to thrive without the protection afforded by the ozone-layer. Scientists raised the alarm when they discovered in the 1970s that human actions had created a hole in this protective ozone shield. The hole was caused by ozone-depleting gases (ODGs)\, which were used in aerosols\, refrigerators\, and air-conditioning coolants. The thinning ozone layer caused increases in the risks of skin cancer\, cataracts\, and other negative consequences. Additionally\, without the ozone layer\, solar energy would damage plants\, crops\, and ecosystems. As a reaction to this threat\, in 1985\, the world’s governments adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. \nUnder the Convention’s Montreal Protocol\, governments\, scientists\, and industry worked together to cut out 99 percent of all ozone-depleting substances. Thanks to the Montreal Protocol\, the ozone layer is regenerating and it is expected to return to pre-1980 values by mid-century. \nWorld Ozone Day celebrates this achievement. It shows that collective decisions and united action\, supported and guided by science\, are the only way to solve major and global challenges.
